| This object is a replica of an artifact found at the South Park site in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. The Whittlesey people who made the artifact abandoned and reoccupied the South Park site several times in the A.D. 1000 and 1600. The original artifact is a fragment of a small celt or axe head that was engraved with the outline of a long-beaked bird such as a raven or crow. The head and the neck are depicted on one side of the piece, and the rest of the body extends around the other side. The particular significance can never be known, yet this piece remains an important and rare example of artistic expression among the indigenous people of northeast Ohio. This replica measures 2.5 by 1.75 inches and is cast of resin. |
