| Join Museum naturalists as they explore the river valleys and associated uplands of glacial sands and gravels in the Dayton area. This land harbors fossil rich limestone and the easterly limits of several plants. The Whip-poor-will and Bobwhite Quail, birds with songs seldom, if ever, heard in Northeast Ohio, still reside here. Southwestern Ohio is a prairie region, home to unique insects, reptiles and amphibians. At this time of year, we should see many species of dragonflies and damselflies, a variety of tiger beetles on the ground and perhaps even the elegant juniper hairstreak butterfly among the red cedar barrens. The rare Seepage Dancer (a damselfly) may be a special highlight of our trip. As time allows, we will stop at the renowned Aullwood Audubon Center to view its prairie planted entirely with Ohio species. A quick trip to see, and perhaps climb, one of Ohio’s tallest prehistoric burial mounds may be included as well. We will vanpool and stay at the centrally located Fairfield Inn to maximize our time outdoors. Expect long days and much discovery, including unique dining experiences at day’s end. Fee includes hotel room and dinner on Thu, Fri and Sat nights; transportation and admission to Aullwood Audubon Center. Participants are on their own for breakfast/lunch daily. The Fairfield Inn has a complimentary continental breakfast and many restaurants are located within walking distance. Limit 12. Naturalist Certificate Hours: 10. Difficulty: 3 (on a 1 to 4 scale) |
