Dr. Floyd Sandford Presents "Darwin Remembers" Saturday, February 14, 2009 Performance 3:30 – 4:45 pm, followed by a 30-minute discussion
As part of its year-long series of events to honor the life and contributions of Charles Darwin, Case Western Reserve University, in conjunction with The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, is bringing Floyd Sandford, Professor Emeritus of Biology at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Cleveland. Dr. Sandford will present his 75-minute performance entitled "Darwin Remembers."
Speaking as Darwin, Sandford will relive significant events from Darwin's life and career including Darwin's early life and historic voyage around the world on the H.M.S. Beagle, as well as life following his return to England, including his marriage to Emma Wedgwood. Sandford will also explore the events leading up to the publication of "On The Origin of Species" in 1859 and the subsequent controversy, such as the historic confrontation at Oxford in 1860 between Samuel Wilberforce, the Bishop of Oxford, and the biologist, Thomas Huxley, Darwin's most loyal and vociferous defender in public forums and debates.
The performance will be followed by a 30-minute discussion with the audience.
Note: Free admission for the performance only; does not include admission into the Museum's galleries. Tickets will not be mailed. There will be a guest list at the door.
