To understand rainbows, you should own a prism.  You will see how white light disperses because of something called the refractive index of the glass, making a rainbow of many colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.  The difference in the refractive index of air and glass causes the light to bend. The angle of bending is different for different wavelengths of light. As the white light moves through the two faces of the prism, different colors bend different amounts and in doing so spread out into a rainbow. Keep this triangular piece of plastic around for the next flurry of questions..."Why is the sky blue?"  Comes with descriptive information and the box measures 2.5 inches square.
