American Red Cross Classes in First Aid, CPR, and AED - Adult, Infant and Child

Booked as needed. Courses vary from 3 to 5 hours in length, depending on which skills your group requires.

Come experience the 2012 updated American Red Cross training and earn your certificate in one easy class! This program is taught by a Red Cross instructor and will help you recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. Participants will practice on manikins and pass their skills testing to earn their certification cards (valid for two years from date of class). Be Red Cross ready!

Due to the varying length of time necessary for this class, call our scheduler at (216) 231-4600, ext. 3214 with a choice of two dates that your group can attend, and we will check instructor availability.

Native woodland wildflowers and shrubs can be a great addition to the home landscape. This seminar will teach you how to utilize the shady areas of your yard to their highest potential by incorporating native species and landscaping in a more natural fashion. Special emphasis will be placed on gardening in a deer-dominated landscape.

Join us for this joint program with The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA). Explore mythic creatures in the world of art including Guardian Griffins, Canopic Jars and Carved Tusk (Edo). At the Museum, explore the Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids exhibit and additional gallery creatures like Cyclops and sea monsters. Bring a sense of imagination as we explore fantastic beings from culture, art and nature. We will be walking from the Museum to CMA and back and through galleries at each location.

In the summer of 2012, the Department of Archaeology will resume test excavations at the Heckleman site, a prehistoric Native American settlement located on the Huron River near Milan, Ohio in Erie County. The program is designed for Museum members who want to participate in an actual archaeological dig and learn the basic techniques of excavation and data recording. Participants may enroll in one to five weeklong sessions.

$200 per week. Application deadline is June 8, 2012.

Minimum age 17. Limit 10 per week. Museum membership is required. No experience is necessary.

Instructor: Dr. David Saja

Using hands-on demonstrations, Dr. David Saja will show how individual atoms are assembled to form crystalline structures, and how these structures define the geometric shapes and physical properties of a crystal. Using simple techniques and tools, you will learn how to identify minerals based on their physical properties.

Optional materials available from the Museum Store: Walter Schumann, Handbook of Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones, and a Mineral ID Kit including 14x hand lens, streak plate, glass plate, masonry nail, copper plate, acid bottle.

Instructors: Museum Education Staff coordinated by Nancy Howell

Help others discover more about the Museum's galleries, hidden secrets and just plain fun stuff by becoming a docent. Docents are volunteers trained to lead tours for the public and assist the Education Division in providing educational programs. The 15 class sessions are jam-packed with information. You'll benefit from this opportunity to teach others in the pleasant surroundings of the Museum. No prior teaching experience or knowledge of natural history is necessary but a zeal for learning and sharing information with visitors of all ages is a must! Those 18 years and older are encouraged to apply.
