General Information on Workshops
Preregistration, including payment, is required for all workshops. Call (216) 231-2075 for further details. Fees can only be refunded with a seven-day notice of cancellation. Light refreshments, certificate of completion and parking in Museum lot are included in the fee.
New! Graduate Credit Information
If you would like to pursue college credit for teacher workshop attendance, prior notification to Science Resource Center staff is required. One graduate credit will be awarded by Ashland University after successful completion of 15 hours of attendance to SRC teacher workshops denoted by the
symbol. An additional fee (currently $175) will be assessed by Ashland University prior to awarding the graduate credit. Call (216) 231-2075 to register.
Project WILD/Aquatic WILD Workshop

Project WILD is one of the most widely-used conservation and environmental education programs among educators of students in kindergarten through high school. The goal of Project WILD is to assist learners of any age in developing awareness, knowledge, skills and commitment to result in informed decisions, responsible behavior and constructive actions concerning wildlife and the environment upon which all life depends. We will thoroughly examine the Project WILD and Aquatic WILD guides so that you will walk away feeling comfortable using them with your class. This workshop is perfect for teachers, youth leaders, camp counselors, naturalists, and all who enjoy nature. Project WILD materials are provided free of charge by the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Participants will receive both the Project WILD and Project WILD Aquatic K-12 Curriculum & Activity Guides.

Local Flora Field Course


Mon-Thurs, July 23-26, 2012, 9 am to 5 pm
Learn plant identification outdoors in this Local Flora field course. The identification and recognition of trees, shrubs, ferns and herbaceous plants of northeastern Ohio will become second nature. Learn the characteristics of common families of plants. Practice using dichotomous, diagnostic keys. Experience first-hand the need for conservation and preservation of natural areas and native habitats. Learn to accurately describe the characteristics of leaves, stems, flowers, inflorescences, fruits and seeds. Successful completion of this two credit course will enable participants to teach others to recognize many species of plants, speak knowledgeably about the importance of plants in northeastern Ohio, write simple keys for plant identification and converse in the language of botany.
Important Notes:
1. Two texts are required for the first day class. Information provided upon registration.
2. There are daily field trips. Transportation is provided by the Museum.
3. Participants provide own lunch, snacks, and beverages daily.
4. For the field trips, please dress for the weather and be aware that we may be in areas with poison ivy, mud, and biting/stinging insects. Long pants, hat and a change of shoes and socks are advised.

Archaeology/Ohio Indians Workshop

Designed for grade 3-8 educators, but all are welcome.
Archaeology Month 2012 has arrived! Are you prepared? Analyze groups of artifacts to identify and describe the various lifestyles of prehistoric culture in Ohio. This portion of the workshop covers the earliest Paleo-Indian groups through the Moundbuilders to the time of European contact. Next we'll excavate a simulated archaeology site on Museum grounds after a classroom orientation on proper archaeological methods. Suitable outdoor clothing is essential. We will discuss additional resources available for teachers at the CMNH Science Resource Center. A teacher pamphlet and a thorough exploration of the Museum galleries are included!

Portable Planetarium: Using StarLab and CosmOdyssey

Bring the night sky to your students! The Science Resource Center has two portable planetariums available for loan. Don’t miss out on this awesome resource sure to wow your students and enhance your earth and space sciences instruction!
To borrow a portable planetarium, you must attend a training workshop at the Museum. The workshop will be facilitated by one of our astronomers. After being instructed on how to properly set up the planetarium, you will spend the majority of the time inside it, learning how to use it effectively with your students. See a variety of cylinders in use and learn essential vocabulary as you tour the night sky. Quality curriculum materials and a visit to the Museum’s Shafran Planetarium are included in the workshop cost.
The portable planetarium is a cross-curricular teaching tool for astronomy, earth science and more that you can bring right into your classroom. It includes everything you need to present interactive, exciting lessons: an inflatable dome, projector, fan and accessories. Inside the dome, a projector displays a variety of images on a 180 degree-by-360 degree hemisphere.
The SRC offers the following projection cylinders: Starfield With Milky Way, Biological Cell (mitosis and meiosis), Constellations, African Mythology, Native American Mythology, Greek Mythology and World Geography. The dome can fit 25 to 35 people. It is accessible to those in wheelchairs and anyone not comfortable crawling through the entry tunnel.

Project WET Educator Workshop

Educate. Empower. Act. The mission of Project WET is to reach children, parents, educators, and communities of the world with water education. We invite you to join us in educating children about the most precious resource on the planet — water. We will thoroughly examine the Project WET guide so that you will walk away feeling comfortable using it with your class. This workshop is perfect for teachers, homeschoolers, scout leaders, naturalists, and non-formal educators. Participants will receive Project WET Curriculum & Activity Guide 2.0. Plan to head outside for a portion of the workshop. Lunch provided. Class limit: 25. Registration deadline: Saturday, November 10.
