Conservation Symposium Series: Workshops
In collaboration with this year’s Conservation Symposium, we are offering three workshops on Thursday, September 8, 2011. All will be held at the Museum.
The Science of Climate Change
Thursday, September 8, 2011
9:30 am to noon
Instructors: Nathan Taxel and Martin Calabrese, M.A., The Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Climate Change--why is it happening? Learn activities that will help you teach your students about the "greenhouse effect" as well as how human generated carbon dioxide is changing this natural process. We will discuss the reflection and refraction of light, energy waves, thermal expansion, and heat convection.
*As part of this workshop, you will get an opportunity to explore the Museum's permanent Dynamic Climate and traveling Climate Change gallery exhibits! Participants will also receive their own copy of the GEMS Global Warming & The Greenhouse Effect activity book. Designed for grade 6-12 educators, but all are welcome.

Native Plants for the Home Garden

Instructors: Garrett Ormiston & Trish MacKeigan, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History
Join Botany and Natural Areas Staff for a seminar about landscaping with native plants. Participants will learn about the threats that invasive plants pose to our natural areas and gardens, and the many advantages to using native plants instead. We will discuss how to make responsible plant choices in your home landscaping and we will provide you with showy examples of native plants that are well-suited to home gardens.

Rain Barrel Workshop: Save the rain for a sunny day!

2 pm to 4 pm
Instructor: Amy Roskilly, Cuyahoga County Soil & Water Conservation District
Learn to harvest rainwater for all your garden needs and to combat storm water pollution in your community! Each workshop participant will construct a rain barrel to take home. A barrel, downspout diverter and all materials are included. It’s ready to be installed on your house.
Limit: 30
Fee: $60 (includes rain barrel, downspout diverter and parts). $20 for extra barrel (to be attached to other barrel to make a two barrel system)
