Cathedral Woods

Kingsville Township, Ashtabula County
27 acres

Cathedral Woods Preserve sits on the Lake Warren Ridge, the same beach ridge that underlies this museum. The types of native forest trees found in this natural area, black, white and chestnut oak, hemlock, black cherry, tulip tree, yellow birch and cucumber magnolia, are similar to those growing in University Circle. However, this species composition is not continuous along the beach ridge in between. Forests in Lake County are of a different makeup. It's only further east, in Ashtabula County, that the mixture of Northern Hemlock Hardwood and Southern Mixed Oak forests resumes. Cathedral Woods is home to two State-Endangered plants, rosey twisted-stalk and striped maple.
