Groves Woods

Mesopotamia Township, Trumbull County
West Farmington Quad
155 acres

Dr. and Mrs. Laurence K. Groves, long-time friends of the Museum, contributed a 55-acre parcel to the Museum in 1986 when they learned of the area's significance. The Groves have plans for the remaining 100 acres to come under Museum stewardship. Running through the Trumbull County preserve is Garden Creek, which is home to some unusual species of coldwater fishes, including the southern red-bellied dace.

Staff of the Natural Areas Division has been working to remove non-native, invasive plants at Groves Woods. We have been successful in our fight with myrtle (Vinca minor) around an abandoned house foundation. We have also worked on removing European buckthorn throughout the northwest corner of the property. Without the removal of these non-native, invasive plants many of Ohio's native plants would be completely choked out.

With its maples and tuliptrees, the preserve has a beautiful display of autumn colors.
