Taber Preserve
Russell Township, Geauga County
20 acres
The Taber Preserve includes rich, mixed forests, channel ponds, floodplain forests and very diverse floodplain meadows. The path through the forest and down to the river is majestic; leading you through a forest of hemlocks, maples and tuliptrees and a carpet of beautiful wildflowers.
Staff of the Natural Areas Division has been removing reed canary grass, a highly-invasive, non-native plant, from the Taber Preserve since 1992. Canary grass is considered the biggest threat to the diversity of our floodplain meadows. Once established it creates a monoculture, not allowing any other plants to survive. Our efforts have proved rewarding.
