Cleveland Geological Society
The Cleveland Geological Society was founded in 1957. Membership is open to people interested in all aspects of geology.
Monthly meetings feature talks on diverse topics, such as the geology of far-flung places, explanations of local points of interest and paleontology. Members and visiting geologists are invited to speak.
The society also holds field trips. These are usually to local sites of interest geologically. However, we occasionally explore more distant locales.
The Cleveland Geological Society helps support a number of Museum programs. Among these are the summer Donald S. Dean Adopt-A-Student Program and Earth Science Day in October.
Events
Meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm in Classroom A on the lower level of the Museum, unless otherwise noted. Guests are welcome. Anyone may bring fossil, mineral and rock specimens to meetings for identification.
If the museum closes due to bad weather, that evening's Cleveland Geological Society meeting and all other night events are automatically cancelled.
In 2011, CMNH Archaeology/Earth Science Day (a combination of the two days) took place on Saturday, October 22. In 2012, CMNH Archaeology/Earth Science Day will be Saturday, October 13. This leads off national Earth Science Week, which is Sunday, October 14 to Saturday, October 20, and takes place during Archaeology Month in Ohio, which is always October.

Dr. Patsy Gerstner, retired Chief Curator of the Dittrick Medical History Center at Case Western Reserve University
Rodgers (1808-1866) was the director of the first Pennsylvania State Geological Survey, one of the first state surveys, and author of one of the first theories of mountain elevation. His career tells us much about early efforts, both successful and otherwise, to understand American geology.
Wed, Apr 18, 2012; 7:30 pm
David Chapman and Joe Klunder, Vertebrate Paleontology Department of The Cleveland Museum of Natural History
For 8 years Chapman and Klunder have presented a program about fossils at Willoughby Middle School, reaching about 275 students (11 separate classes) in one day. They will explain how and why they give this program as they present it to us. This can show how other schools can use them as a paleontological resource.
The meeting will be held in Classroom A on the lower level of the Museum. Guests are welcome. Anyone may bring fossil, mineral and rock specimens to meetings for identification.
