The Museum opened its doors to the public for the first time on June 24, 1922, in a mansion on Euclid Avenue.

Today, we are a 220,000-square-foot institution on University Circle with nearly 6 million items in our collections, thousands of acres of protected natural areas, curators known nationally and internationally for their research, and educational programs that reach students throughout Northeast Ohio.

As we embark upon our 85th year, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is undertaking multiple major initiatives that will significantly grow our impact within the local, regional and worldwide communities:

  • Increasing Museum collections and exhibits, including exciting new dinosaur mounts.
  • Conducting ground-breaking scientific research, such as Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie’s study of recently discovered hominids and Dr. Michael Ryan’s study of new dinosaur species.
  • Pioneering new educational services, many housed in our new Distance Learning Labs.
  • Creating revolutionary health programming, combining the strengths and expertise of the merged natural history and health staffs.
  • Opening the recently announced Center for Regional Sustainability, addressing the unprecedented environmental challenges of the 21st Century.
  • Planning for the Museum’s upcoming expansion and renovation project, creating a world-class natural sciences institution to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Funding these new programs and other ongoing Museum activities is becoming more expensive every year. In our 2007/08 campaign, the Museum has budgeted for a $900,000 contribution from the Annual Fund, a very modest 1.9% increase over 2006/07.

Won’t you help the Museum as it carries out its great work for all humanity?

About the Annual Fund

The Annual Fund provides general operating support for the Museum. These essential gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations keep our doors open to visitors, maintain our research and collections, and secure our future. Annual Fund dollars are invested in:

  • Museum collections, scientific research and fieldwork
  • Exhibit upkeep and development
  • Innovative educational programs
  • Services to underserved schoolchildren in Northeast Ohio
  • Building and grounds maintenance
  • Northeast Ohio jobs – salaries of Museum curators, educators, administrators and other staff.

Your generous gift to the Museum's Annual Fund is critical to the ongoing excellence of everything we do. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. All charitable donations to the Museum are tax-deductible as provided by law.
