Brazil’s Pantanal
August 29 – September 13 2010
Join Dr. Andy Jones, Curator of Ornithology at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and explore the world’s largest wetland. The Pantanal is located on the country’s western side near Bolivia and Paraguay and spans 140,000 km2 throughout the states of Mato Grasso and Mato Grosso dol Sul. This area contains river corridors, gallery forests, perennial wetlands and lakes, seasonally inundated grasslands, and terrestrial forests. This expanse of land contains one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet.
The Pantanal is home to hundreds of species of birds, including the iconic Hyacinth Macaw and Greater Rhea. Mammals of the area include Capybara, Marsh Deer, Giant Anteaters, and Tapirs, and we will be visiting one of the world's best sites to seek Jaguar (a trip in 2009 found five!). Trip participants can expect to be overwhelmed by the diversity and the density of birds, as we have timed this trip to coincide with the end of the dry season when the animals congregate in their largest numbers.
An extension will also be offered, ending September 21, to visit the endangered Atlantic Coastal Forest (home to many endemic but endangered bird species).
