2004a. Smeadia Clevelandensi, gen. et sp. nov. from the Upper Devonian Cleveland Shale of Ohio, U.S.A.  Shya Chitaley and Cheng-Sen Li. Palaeontographica Beitrage Zur Naturgeschichte Der Vorzeit  Stuttgart, Band 268:75-92, with 10 plates, 5 text-figures and 1 table.

This fossil was named in honor of the Smead Family who have been strong supporters of the Paleobotany Department.

1996. “Clevelandodendron ohioensis, gen. et sp. nov., a slender upright lycopsid from the Late Devonian Cleveland Shale of Ohio.”  American Journal of Botany, vol. 83(6)781-789.  (With Kathleen B. Pigg).

Clevelandodendron ohioensis, a slender club moss, was identified and determined to be a new species in 1996, was named in honor of the Bi-centennial Anniversary of the City of Cleveland, Ohio. It grew 363 million years ago during the Upper Devonian Period and was found in the Cleveland Shale Formation during construction of I-71 in Cleveland, Ohio.

This unnamed lycopsid cone (CMNH P-4207) is from the Cleveland Shale Formation and is Upper Devonian in age was uncovered during I-71 construction in Cleveland, Ohio.
