Areas of Specialization or Interest
Using museum specimens and DNA sequences to understand the evolutionary history of birds, including biogeography and taxonomy. Focus is on Appalachian and Philippine bird species.
Current Research
Examining effects of Pleistocene climate change on birds in the Appalachians and the Philippines.
Collaborating with Mark Robbins of the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History and Dr. Brian Barber of the American Museum of Natural History and Dr. Nate Rice of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia to study species limits and vocal evolution in pygmy-owls (genus Glaucidium).
Describing the evolutionary relationships of a poorly studied bird in the Philippines, in collaboration with Dr. Robert S. Kennedy of the Maria Mitchell Natural History Association and Dr. F. Keith Barker of the University of Minnesota.
Analyzing the population and conservation genetics of the federally endangered Black-capped Vireo (Vireo atricapilla), with Dr. Robert M. Zink of the University of Minnesota and Dr. Craig Farquhar of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
