Johnstown mastodon

One of the best mastodon specimens ever recovered

Paleontologists recognize the Johnstown Mastodon as one of the best mastodon specimens ever recovered. Discovered by a tenant farmer in 1926, the remains were quickly identified as belonging to a mastodon, but did not immediately end up in a scientific institution. The skeleton was first treated as a sideshow, with thousands of paying spectators lining up to get a glimpse of the creature. Later that year, the Museum acquired the mastodon through a generous donation.
