The Great American Biotic Interchange

Glyptodon was a heavily armored herbivore. It is commonly studied by scientists examining the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI), an event in which land mammals moved back and forth between North and South America on a newly formed land bridge, the Panamanian isthmus.

Glyptodon coexisted with humans. It went extinct at the end of the Pleistocene Epoch, along with many other large North American mammals. Climate change and hunting by humans likely contributed to their extinction.
