Sharks have been a mainstay of the world’s oceans for more than 400 million years, surviving the most disruptive events in Earth's history: global mass extinctions. With the end of the reign of Dunkleosteus in the Late Devonian, sharks were poised to reoccupy many of the niches once dominated by these fearsome armored fish.
