All living things have deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, a complex molecule that provides the blueprint for that organism. All DNA has the same basic building blocks: alternating base pairs (adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine) connected by sugars and phosphates. It’s how these components are organized that make a rose different from an elephant.
