The eyes of vertebrates, including humans, are complex—they function a lot like cameras, with lenses, apertures, and photoreceptors. Both the complex camera eyes of vertebrates and the compound eyes of invertebrates evolved from basic photoreceptor cells in microbes.
The eye does not interpret the data it collects; the brain does. That can lead to errors of interpretation. We refer to these fun confusions as optical illusions.
