Celebrate National Moth Week with a moth lighting at the North Kingsville Sand Barrens!

Join Cleveland Museum of Natural History staff as we search for moths at night! We’ll set up light traps—lights of varying wavelengths projected onto sheets—to attract moths, beetles, and other insects, allowing us to get up close with these nocturnal winged wonders.

The Museum’s North Kingsville Sand Barrens Preserve is an ideal location to look for insects. Its varied habitats, including open sand, upland forest, and seepage wetlands, host a diverse suite of insects, from moths and butterflies to dragonflies and walkingsticks. We’ll walk through these habitats before it gets dark, then settle in at the lights to see what insects come to visit.

Dark-colored clothing is encouraged. The trails at the Sand Barrens are easy, but a flashlight or headlamp will help you navigate in the dark.
