Friends of CMNH Science Series | Archaeology in the Valley: The Everett Knoll Complex

Join the Friends of CMNH on the second Saturday of each month at 10am for coffee, refreshments, and conversation, followed at 10:30am by the Friends of CMNH Science Series.

In 1875, at the first annual meeting of the Archaeological Society of Ohio—which would become the Ohio History Connection—a now-anonymous speaker gave a presentation titled, "Some Curious Works in the Northern Part of Summit County, Ohio." This presentation focused on an Indigenous burial site in the village of Everett, located west of the Cuyahoga River and north of Furnace Run.

Here, an earthwork was identified during the construction of a schoolhouse for the village. The site is now known as the Everett Knoll Complex and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places for its association with Hopewell Culture.

In 1970, an archaeologist from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History excavated at the site, recovering ancestral remains and burial objects which have since undergone repatriation.

From 2021–2025, Summit Metro Parks and the University of Akron conducted archaeological work in the occupation area of this site. This presentation covers the history of the site, the archaeology conducted there, and the challenges of protecting Indigenous heritage in Ohio.
