Smead Discovery Center

—Presented by PNC

Hands-on fun for young explorers of science and nature

Smead Discovery Center—Presented by PNC is the Museum’s hands-on learning center. Located on the lower level, this intergenerational space encourages guests to enjoy the wonders of science and nature together. While the center is designed primarily for our youngest scientists (children ages 7 and younger), visitors of all ages are invited to dig for dinosaurs, take an up-close look at Museum specimens, design constellations, and so much more.

Show & Tell

On weekdays at 12:30pm and 2pm, and weekends at 10:30am and 2pm, join our early-childhood educators for a special show-and-tell program!

Tyrannosaurus Tuesdays

Each Tuesday beginning January 14, 2025, Smead Discovery Center will offer a dynamic, relevant, and accessible menu of early-childhood programming. Join us in celebrating all things science and natural history as Smead facilitators lead you through engaging activities that promote early development milestones such as social and emotional growth, fine and gross motor skills, pattern and sight-word recognition, and more! Programs highlight important Museum collections and fields of research, introducing the natural world to our smallest scientists.

Themes and activities rotate throughout the month, offering you an exciting new experience each time you visit. The current theme rotation is as follows:

First Tuesday: Happy Humans
What are humans anyway? How did we get here? How do we take care of our bodies? Explore our human ancestors and practice healthy habits to incorporate into our everyday lives.

Second Tuesday: Paleontology Pals
What is a fossil? How do fossils form? Dig into the science of fossils and become an official Cleveland Museum of Natural History paleontologist with your very own nametag!

Third Tuesday: Wildlife Warriors
Animals move in different ways, live in different places, and eat different things. Let’s learn about local animals and even meet some in person!

Fourth Tuesday: Nature Kids
How are we connected to nature? What is our role in the natural world? Become a naturalist and discover how you can be a good steward in your community and beyond.

Fifth Tuesday: Astro Buddies
Where is space? How do we get there? What is it like in space?  Moonwalk into Smead Discovery Center for a stellar adventure through space, time, and all things astronomy.
