The Museum is proud to share that Associate Curator of Human Evolution, Dr. Elizabeth “Ebeth” Sawchuk, has been recognized by Crain’s Cleveland as part of its 40 Under 40 program. This award honors exceptional young professionals across diverse industries and highlights dynamic leaders who are making an impact on our region.

Dr. Sawchuk joined the Museum in 2022 and has contributed significantly to the Museum’s Anthropological Sciences program—continuing our long history of groundbreaking discoveries in the field. A bioarchaeologist, Dr. Sawchuk’s work focuses on modern human evolution and population history in Africa over the past 50,000 years. She has conducted fieldwork across eastern Africa, studying evidence from archaeology, skeletal biology, dental anthropology, and ancient DNA (aDNA) to understand how past peoples coped with major changes in their world and what we can learn from their experiences. And this year, she co-led a perspective piece published in the American Journal of Human Genetics on the need for an equitable and inclusive future for DNA and aDNA research in Africa.

Dr. Sawchuk’s advocacy for ethical research in anthropology, her leadership in the study of aDNA, and her role in sharing scientific knowledge with our audiences have made substantial contributions in the scientific community and the communities of Northeast Ohio.
