Identifying bird species at Mentor Marsh.
What is BirdNET-Pi?
Developed by researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, BirdNET-Pi is a device that detects, records, and identifies bird vocalizations.
The Cleveland Museum of Natural History recently installed one of these devices at the Mentor Marsh Carol H. Sweet Nature Center. Learn more about BirdNET-Pi.
Why is it important?
BirdNET-Pi provides public data that allows experts and citizen scientists to study the vocalizations of birds and monitor their location. This information is of particular value during spring migration, when thousands of birds make a brief stop in Northeast Ohio. Knowing which bird species are present on Museum preserves and—perhaps more important—which species are absent helps guide our conservation efforts.
How can I get involved?
You’re invited to explore and listen to the BirdNET-Pi data collected so far. We recommend downloading the BirdNET app on a smart device so you can identify bird vocalizations anywhere. For a more in-depth look at bird data, browse BirdWeather, an interactive map that plots bird vocalizations.
