Discovery starts here.

World-class collections, groundbreaking research, cutting-edge facilities, and vital conservation efforts: Behind the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s public galleries, exhibits, and programs are expert teams of scientists and conservationists working to advance scientific knowledge and protect the natural world.

Using the Museum’s specialized research facilities and vast collections containing millions of specimens, our scientists continue our legacy of more than 100 years of discovery. They conduct fieldwork in Ohio and around the globe and contribute research to top peer-reviewed publications, bringing the latest scientific knowledge to your fingertips. Our interdisciplinary teams rely on the Museum's unique collections to study the full range of natural sciences, including astronomy, biological sciences, anthropological sciences, Earth sciences, and all the fields within those areas of study.

Outside our walls, the Museum works to steward and protect more than 12,500 acres of natural areas across 65 preserves in northern Ohio—a “living collection” that is unique to our Museum. These natural areas serve as dynamic living laboratories and as places where people can connect with and learn about nature firsthand. Many are also the focus of active conservation efforts.

Whether you’re a curious visitor or a visiting researcher, we invite you to learn more about the Museum’s areas of study, collections, facilities, and projects through the pages below.
