The Museum’s fossil preparation lab supports our Earth sciences research and field projects through preparation, conservation, and imaging of fossil specimens. It houses equipment for fossil preparation and conservation, including manual preparation tools, a fume hood, a dust extractor, a rock trimmer, microscopes, air scribes, and three Swam Blaster air abrasion units. This lab is also set up for the 3D scanning of fossil specimens, making use of an Artec Micro structured light scanner.
Volunteers and Students
The fossil preparation lab has a long tradition of engaging students and volunteers to help with the many tasks that facilitate ongoing paleontology research. Please browse our Museum volunteer opportunities for available volunteer projects.
